Sleepover is the second episode of Season 2 of Clone High, and the fifteenth episode of the overall series.

Synopsis[]

Attempting to repress her feelings for Abe, Joan finds solace in Harriet and Frida. Meanwhile, Confucius teaches JFK about the internet.

Plot[]

Joan attends a sleepover with Frida and Harriet. During the sleepover, Frida and Harriet confess to Joan that they accidentally ran over a person while biking and decided to bury him, vowing to keep it a secret. However, it turned out that the person they hit was actually alive and was grateful for the incident as it inspired him to make positive changes in his life.

Joan is taken aback by the close friendship between Harriet and Frida, as her previous experience with girls like Cleo involved constant criticism and competition. Joan learns to trust Harriet and Frida, and genuinely becomes friends with them. While discussing her lack of female friends in 2003, Joan mentions the challenges she faced in gaining recognition from men, highlighting how even TV writers' rooms would typically have only one female writer.

Meanwhile, Topher harasses JFK online. Confucius points out his grammatical error of using the possessive form "your" instead of the contraction "you're."

In math class, Joan has a dream about having a sexual encounter with Abe. She accidentally utters Abe's name loudly during her dream, which becomes humiliating when she realizes she said his name out loud in real life. She awkwardly tries to pass it off as enthusiasm for algebra.

Candide instructs Scudworth and Butlertron to create a truth serum to uncover the girls' secrets by spiking their drinks. However, the three end up drinking the serum themselves, revealing that Mr. B had an intimate encounter with a coffee maker and that Scudworth has an Oedipus complex.

Trivia[]

  • Joan of Arc breaks the fourth wall to bring up how the original run of Clone High only had one female writer.
  • A running gag in this episode is for someone to over explain the rules of sleepovers, much to the annoyance of the person they're talking to, who already knows the rules of sleepovers.
  • Abe Lincoln can do a lighthouse impression, where he spins his head around and makes lights come out of his eyes and mouth.
  • Topher Bus is required by his therapist to have at least three social interactions a month or else he'll have to be institutionalized in a mental asylum during the spring break.
  • Confucius introduces JFK to the internet, specifically to FlipFlop.
    • He creates an account under the name "firechillbro" and has a giraffe with sunglasses as his profile picture.
  • Harriet and Frida introduce Joan of Arc to the common sleepover game, Never Have I Ever.
  • Harriet Tubman and Frida Kahlo met in 2014 and befriended each other over their shared love for tandem biking.
    • On September 13th of that year, they apparently ran over and killed a guy named Frederico on their bikes and buried him alive. However, it's revealed later that Frederico survived the hit-and-run accident and used this near-death experience as a wake-up call to change his life for the better... only for him to return in the present day and fall into a ditch and die for real.
  • Topher's FlipFlop account is "top-her69".
  • Principal Scudworth drunkenly reveals that he has an Oedipus complex and admits that his crush on Candide Sampson is fueled solely by the fact that she reminds him of his mother.
  • Candide Sampson admits to having a dream about being pregnant with Mr. Butlertron's baby and admits that she wants to be a mom.
  • Mr. Butlertron admits he "got freaky" with a coffee machine once and broke it.
  • JFK struggles with autocorrect during his flame war with Topher Bus, typing "Duck off", "Fck*" and "FUNK*" at him.
  • Topher owns a guitar but he doesn't play it. He just got it as a present from his uncle.
  • Joan tells Harriet and Frida her sex dream about Abe and JFK but they promise to keep it a secret.
  • Candide admits that Scudworth is really good at his job, when he tells a lie to help get her out of trouble, using a lie serum he invented. However, she was also under the influence of the lie serum, which suggests she doesn't really believe this.

Continuity[]

Cultural References[]

  • Joan of Arc finds Doritos on the ground.
  • Topher Bus has a sticker in his locker that reads "Kony 2012".
  • The girls watch a movie called "The People Under The People Under The Stairs", which is a parody on the 1991 horror movie The People Under The Stairs.
  • Frida Kahlo addresses Joan as "Joanuary Joans", a pun on American actress January Jones.
  • The girls summon Bloody Mary to play with them at their sleepover.
  • A trio of teenagers are seen dabbing on FlipFlop.
  • Some FlipFlop accounts have referential names:
    • "FeetDavidson6969" is a reference to American actor and comedian Pete Davidson, as well as the sexual act of 69ing.
    • "G03RGIA_0QU33F" is a reference to American modernist artist, Georgia O'Keeffe. It's possible that this account belongs to the clone of Georgia O'Keeffe.
  • Several of the FlipFlop comments mention use stereotypical Gen Z terminology such as; "ok but", "Karen", and "TBH".
    • There's also usage of the "No One: ... X: Y:" comment format.
  • Joan of Arc was once attracted to Pinocchio.
  • The sleepover story contains a parody of the movie I Know What You Did Last Summer, with even a direct reference to the line, instead being "I know what you did eight autumns ago."
  • Mr. Butlertron references to the 1988 Tom Cruise movie Cocktail, and also brings up the Beach Boys song, "Kokomo", which was featured in the movie.
  • Topher also has a poster of the iconic "Coexist" bumper sticker in his room.
  • Topher calls JFK "Rocky Balboa dumb".
  • Joan of Arc references the Prince song "Purple Rain", but Frida and Harriet don't get the reference.
  • Frida uses the term "sus", an abbreviation of the word "suspicious", popularized by the MMORPG game Among Us.

Historical References[]

  • Joan's wet dream about Abe include many top hats making phallic symbolism. This is a reference to how a stovepipe top hat was the iconic hat of the Original Abraham Lincoln.
  • Also, during Joan's wet dream one of the images that flashes in the background is a painting of the Lincoln assassination.
  • Topher has a ship-in-a-bottle in his house right by the front door. The real Christopher Columbus was a sailor who travelled the world in ships such as the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria.
  • Caitlyn mistakes Abe for Benjamin Franklin as both of them are historical figures in American politics.
  • Topher Bus has a pear-shaped globe in his room, which could be referencing the myth that Christopher Columbus discovered the world was round during one of his sailing expeditions. However, in real life, Columbus was always aware the world was round and did not need a trip across the ocean to discover this.
